cockatoo
The cockatoo comes in sizes ranging from .12 to 30 inches. Eleven of the 21 species occur in Australia only .They are popular as pets
on account of their great beauty and intelligence. Affectionate and gentle, they are known as the velcro parrots since they enjoy cuddling
with their owners a great deal. Like all the large parrots they are high maintenance pets who need a lot of interaction. They enjoy
showing off and need a lot of attention. They require large cages and because they chew everything toys are a must for them. They are
messy bird who enjoy tossing their food around and their feathers produce dust. It is likely that you will need to cook for this bird also.
Feeding a cockatoo involves a lot more than just tossing him seeds. They are also very loud. They have fairly a good ability to mimic
speech but not as well as Amazons and African Greys,. Their lifespan ranges from 40-70 years

the pocket parrots
The Pacific parrotlet is the most popular pet parrotlet . These little parrots are native to South and Central America. They are fearless and very bold
little parrots measuring about 4 inches. They often learn to speak a few words which their utter in their tiny voices. These little parrots are not
capable of screaming like the larger parrots. It is a great pet for those who want all the characteristics of the large parrot personality in a small
package. They do not require the same amount of attention as the larger parrots and definitely require less maintenance . They are very
intelligent and very active and require a lot of toys to keep from being bored. They are not as destructive as large parrots and will not eat the
kitchen table, however they do need to be supervised when they are outside their cages because they can get in a lot of trouble.. Parrotlets are
also known to eat a lot and to be aggressive towards other animals.
As parrots become more popular as pets, more and more books, videos and books on training become available. However a basic understanding of
parrot behaviour is better than any type of training. Before we even try to educate a parrot it is important that we educate ourselves about parrots. There are
some things we need to know about parrots that are absolutely necessary if we are to be successful as parrot owners.
Most of the undesirable behaviours we encounter in parrots is directed linked to their instincts. Screaming is something that parrots need to do in the wild.
In their native forests they scream at sunrise when they are off to forage, They scream to communicate with other members of their flocks. When we
consider how far their screams (calls) have to travel in the forests we understand why they are so loud. This is especially true of South American parrots
since they often congregate with parrots of other species. Not only do their screams have to carry far but they also have to be heard over the very high noise
level produced by the screams of other parrot species.
Captive parrots will inevitably scream. It does no good to punish parrots as they do not understand punishment. Also, if screaming gets a parrot some
attention, then invariably the parrot will scream even more than it needs to. However, by ignoring this undesirable behaviours one can get a parrot to stop
screaming. Parrots need attention and if certain types of behaviours are not rewarded with attention they will tend to change their ways.
Parrots do bite, however in the wild parrots do not bite each other. A parrot may bite to show discomfort, displeasure, fear etc... It is important to build a partnership with one's parrot and to
read the parrot's body language correctly, One should never force a parrot to do anything he does not want to do. A parrot will also bite as a form of play, i.e. to explore one's fingers, but
there again it is our responsibility to let the parrot know how hard it is allowed to bite us. A parrot will also bite to get attention. And again if it is rewarded for such undesirable behaviour, it
will do it again.
Parrots have a very strong instinctive need to bond. That need is also present in captive parrots. In the wild parrots will forge very strong bonds with their mate and their flocks. They are very
social birds that do everything together. A parrot with strong bonds with a human may decide that a cage or a room in the house or the entire house itself is its territory and will become very
aggressive in its defense of this territory and thus be very unpleasant with visitors that it perceives as intruders. A parrot should be encouraged to bond with more than one person. This
make them more sociable overall.
