Wide Sargasso sea, Jean Rhys
The burning parrot scene in Wide Sargasso Sea is
very disturbing. When they escaped from the burning
house,Mr. Mason tried to stop Annette from running
back into the house to rescue her parrot Coco. Coco
is on fire and cannot fly away from the flames because
Mr. Mason had clipped his wings. We simply see the
flaming parrot fall to its death. The mob that had
been torching the house withdrew from the scene
perhaps sensing that the flaming parrot was a bad
omen. As it turns out Antoinette does meet with a fate
similar to Coco's in Jane Eyre.
In the movie version, we see the poor flaming parrot
fall down in flames and this unfortunate event seems
so ominous to those who witness it that they simply
cease torching the house perhaps sensing that some
greater evil is at work.
