The true parrots are roughly 330 species of birds belonging to the Psittacidae family,. The
true parrot family is usually divided into 2 groups, i.e., the Psittacinae (typical parrots and
allies) and the Loriinae (Lories and lorikeets).

The long tailed clade
Of the many true parrot species, 6 are classified as Macaws. Macaws are native to Mexico, Central and South America. Macaws
are usually associated with rain forests, however many of them prefer woodlands and savannas. The Yellow collared, Military and Blue winged
Macaws prefer dry or savanna habitats, whereas the Blue and yellow, Green winged, Red bellied, Noble Macaws prefer humid forests.
The one characteristic that distinguishes the Macaw from all the other parrots is the bare facial patch around the eyes. The Macaws family members have a
very wide range in size. The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest Macaw (40 inches in length) and is possibly the largest of all parrots, whereas the smallest
macaw, the Red shouldered Macaw, is about the size of a little conure.
The Blue Macaws
The Glaucus Macaw can probably be found in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil. It
is on the endangered list however, and it is not known if the species is still in existence.
The last sighting of this macaw took place in the 60s. If it is still in existence, the population
must be very tiny.
The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in the world. It is said that the Hyacinth
macaw flies like a jumbo jet..The Hyacinth macaw is often thought to be a rain forest parrot,
however in its native South and Central range it seems to avoid the heavy
forest areas preferring instead lightly forested areas like grasslands and scrub
bushes It is native to a large area of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. In Paraguay the
hyacinth macaw population does inhabit rain forests and swamps.
Their habitat has been reduced by urban development, and so by the loss of the few
types of trees it lives on and feeds from.. The species has been affected by trapping,
pet trade and trade in parrot feathers.. It is on the endangered list. These truly beautiful
parrots are cobalt blue and they lack the featherless patch around the eyes that is
common to other macaws. The have very strong beak. It is said that they could crack
coconuts with their beaks
The Lear's Macaw, aka the Indigo Macaw is native to Brazil and has a very restricted range.
It is a smaller less handsome relative of the Hyacinth macaw, and one of the rarest parrot.
It is on the endangered list.
The Lear's Macaw is almost totally dependent on the Licuri palm tree nuts as these make
up 90 % of their diets. These nuts are miniature little coconuts and the white meat inside
is what feeds these parrots. They live in white forests where they will feed on maize when
the Llicuri nuts are seasonally unavailable., and that often leads to their being treated as
pests by the local farmers.
There's about 2-5000 Lear's Macaws in existence at present. Their range is restricted to
the Bahia state in Brazil. The main threats facing them trapping for pet trade and being
hunted as pests.

America from Panama south to Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay. They originated in Central
America and northern South America in Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil.
Blue and Yellow Macaws are usually found in lowland areas from Panama all the way
to Paraguay. They seem to to prefer forests of moderate density but they can also be
found in palm tree s above water sources such as the swampy grounds or along rivers.
Their diet includes fruit fiber, nuts, and seeds, with their favorite food being the seed
of the Hura Crepitans tree. They take to the open country when they are foraging for
food.
The Blue-throated Macaw is found in central Bolivia and also has a small
population in Argentina. Very few of them are found in the wild (as few as 100) and the
main threats facing them are trapping for pet trade and the natives burning the
rainforest. It is on the critically endangered list.
They normally live in humid dense lowland forests and palm grove in the grass lands.
They do not dwell in forests as a rule they stay in the savannas They tend to feed on
fruits, especially palm nut fruits, nuts and buds.
The Blue-throated Macaw is a one of the rarest birds in the world. It has become
known only since the late 1970's.

woodlands.
The Red-fronted Macaw, is endemic to a small area of Bolivia and is highly endangered,
